Some of us have bad days. We all need to face this unfortunate reality.

But what if you meet someone whose day is even worse than yours?  Henry Altmann is mistakenly told that he has 90 minutes to live. Now he has only 90 minutes to fix some family issues, make tender love with his wife, and dance with his son, before he dies…

I will be one of the people to write a positive review for “The Angriest Man in Brooklyn”.  Not because of Robin Williams, or Mila Kunis, but rather, because I watched this absolutely crazy, funny, and sometimes incredibly dumb film on just the right day, at just the right time.  And, because of this, I managed to cry and laugh the entire time.

The film, directed by Phil Aiden Robinson (The Sum Of All Fears, Field of Dreams), starts with the narrative voice of Robin Williams, as Henry Altmann, who tells his own story; not just the story of his life. He tells us ‘who’ and ‘what’ he is. It is not difficult to understand ‘what he is’; we get to know him as a very impatient and dangerously angry person, in Brooklyn- and maybe, not just in Brooklyn.

Henry Altmann is on his way to a doctor’s appointment. Before he gets to the hospital, he manages to have an argument with the taxi driver who hits his car. Well, who would not be angry after a car accident?  Anyone would.  Even so, I am quite sure that no one would get as angry as Henry Altman.

Meantime, Henry Altmann has an appointment at the hospital, which he has no intention of missing. However, as everyone knows, that once inside a hospital, you will not be leaving anytime soon.

. Nothing is as easy as it seems.  The thing is, Henry Altmann is not the only one who has had a bad day. Dr. Sharon Gill (Mila Kunis), , who is enduring possibly the worse day of her life, reveals to Henry that he has a brain aneurysm. This news makes Henry even angrier. He yells at Sharon, who if not for her calming drugs, would be yelling back.  Henry demands to know how much time he has left. Faced with Henry`s unexpected anger and insults, Sharon tells him he has only 90 minutes to live. Shocked by this news, Henry storms out of the office leaving Sharon in an equally shocked state- stunned by what she has just done.

Once Henry finds out he has only 1 ½ hours to live, he determines to make amends with everyone he has hurt throughout his life. This journey will not be easy, since his anger and desperate feelings are much stronger than the circumstances he is about to face.

This film has an incredibly talented cast that transformed this film into a huge success. But the script, written by Daniel Taplitz, does not allow, even Robin Williams, to expand beyond his boundless talent. Even with such poor writing, Robin Williams and Mila Kunis, with their funny performance, managed to make me laugh, especially in the scene when Henry Altmann tries to buy a video camera. I would never tire of watching that ridiculously funny moment. Despite the fact that I really enjoyed watching “The Angriest Man in Brooklyn”, I have to admit that by continually trying to go in two opposite directions, the idea of this film was, somehow lost in the middle; taking us nowhere.

  1. Really cool to finally see a positive review for this! I was thinking about watching it due to the cast but the reviews kind of scared me off. Poor writing is always a shame when a film has such a great cast!

    1. I watched it a few days ago without reading all these negative reviews. I watched it because of Robin Williams. And I really liked it. Yes, it was kind of silly film, but still interesting to watch. I was surprised seeing so many negative reviews. Some of them I found really awful! I don’t think it was that bad…
