It is fascinating to see how Billy Wilder’s SOME LIKE IT HOT stands the test of time. Every time you watch it, you realize more than before how brilliantly this film has been constructed.. But when you laugh at the same jokes again, no doubt you will find yourself watching one of the best comedy ever made. And when you see such a fantastic cast as Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Joe E. Brown as Osgood Fielding III and the immortal Marilyn Monroe, you know that the film simply has no possibility of going wrong.
When you witness a hit by chance, it will bring you an unbeatable enemy. When you try to escape from trouble by getting into another one, such as dressing up like a woman to join all-female- band, then wait for complications. Two musicians, Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) find themselves in the center of gang warfare and see seven people get killed. They thus go on the run. A local agency is looking for two musicians, a female saxophonist and a female contrabassist, the two fugitives dress up as women and join the band. But the biggest problem is yet to come, when they meet a beautiful blonde Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) who complicates their situation even more….
As soon as the film begins, we are in the ocean of intelligently written dialogues with hilarious lines, and beautiful atmosphere instantly prevails. Uncontrollably spontaneous laughter is one of the factors that bring the viewers back to see this film again. The tango scene between Jerry/Dafna with Osgood Fielding III is one of the most hilarious moments you would not want to miss. And the ending scene where Osgood says, “Well, nobody’s perfect” will make you laugh so hard that you forget anything that had bothered you before. And of course, Marilyn Monroe as Sugar is a gift for any filmmaker, not only because she enlivens the film with her beautiful presence, but also because we see how eccentrically gifted actress she was. And receiving the Golden Globe Award for best actress in musical and comedy in 1960 is an inarguable proof that she was such an actress.
