Filmmaker Deepa Mehta: presented with keys to Florence and honored by River to River Florence Indian Film Festival!
Florence and the River to River Florence Indian Film Festival are paying tribute to Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta this week for her contribution to cinema.
On Saturday, December 5, in the city’s marvellous Palazzo Vecchio, Mehta was presented with the Keys to the City by the Deputy Mayor of Florence, Cristina Giachi.
Mehta is also guest of honour at the 15th River to River Florence Indian Film Festival, which on December 6th is hosting the Italian premiere of her latest film, Beeba Boys, a crime thriller inspired by the Indo-Canadian gangster scene in Vancouver. Bollywood star Randeep Hooda plays the charismatic gang leader of the Beeba Boys, which means “the good guys.”Mehta will be in attendance to introduce the film.
Through her films, Deepa Mehta has always brought tough subjects to the world’s attention. Two of those landmark films will be shown at the festival. Playing December 8 is Academy Award-nominated Water (2005), the third instalment in Mehta’s “Elements Trilogy,” about an eight-year-old widow who must live in eternal penance at an ashram with other Hindu widows. Coming up December 10 is Midnight’s Children (2012), an adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Booker prize-winning book– the script was written by Rushdie himself – about the fate of two children, born on the day of India’s independence and switched at birth by a nurse.
