Ever since Prison Break and The Walking Dead, Sarah Wayne Callies has earned the reputation of being a trustworthy actor, whose TV projects more or less succeed. That’s one of the reasons I always give a shot to any project that comes from her side. As for Josh Holloway, after the failed Intelligence, he certainly needed to gain back his name as an actor who can by himself lead a TV Series. Colony, created by Ryan Condal and Carlton Cuse, seems like the right “home” for two talented actors, Callies and Holloway, to take the audience into a new dimension.
Set in dystopia in the near future, Colony centers on a family which must find the right balance to survive with two children in L.A. Bloc, under regime of military occupation by an organization known as the Colony Transitional Authority. Will Bowman (Josh Holloway) has a secret he wishes to keep unrevealed from the authorities. However, soon after heading to Santa Monica, a closed zone to look for his disappeared son, he ends up in prison, from where he is shortly being released by Alan Snyder, the Proxy Governor of the L.A. Bloc.
The Governor finds out about Will’s rich past and asks him to help in his battle against the Resistance and Insurgency (without universal support). Will, of course, says no in the beginning. However, the promise that Governor gave him to find his son makes our hero to agree to Alan’s term. His wife, Katie Bowman (Sarah Wayne Callies) is not pleased with what her husband promises, as she has her own dark secret and wants to stay as it is. In the meantime, there are many facts you will find out throughout the pilot episode, where the world the Bowman family lives has many medical problems such as diabetes, that has been “deemed unworthy of treatment”, and insulin that can be found only in the black market, or be stolen from local hospitals.
The pilot episode of Colony gives hope for survival in the big competitive ‘air’. Even though it is set somewhere in the near future, you still find it engaging to follow due to the future confrontation between Callies and Holloway’s character they are yet to face. The performance delivered by the cast is also solid, which adds an extra bonus to the USA NETWORK’s series. It has an interesting perspective of a future we all hope not to have. Saying that, Colony is a worth seeing show with a great cast and plot that won’t bore you at all.
