Every time I watch Rob Reiner’s When Harry Met Sally… written by the incredibly talented and imaginative Nora Ephron, it makes me love watching films more than I already do. There is something special about it: the way the characters are written so innocently and charmingly played by Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal, Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby, yet, being so romantically atmospheric. Yes, When Harry Met Sally stood the test of time, which, after seeing it once again, I’ve realized, will never fail to travel through generations without success…
When Harry Met Sally… follows the title characters, Sally (Meg Ryan) and Harry (Billy Crystal) who first are introduced to us in 1977, when Sally was about to give a ride to Harry to New York. By then, they did not know each other and would not even consider to build any relationship whatsoever. They both strongly believe that there cannot be a friendship between a man and a woman because, as per Harry, there is no man that would not want to get close to an attractive woman, even if that woman is the best friend. And if that happens, there will be nothing left as friendship…
Many years later, Harry and Sally meet again. This time she is dating Joe, and Harry is getting ready to tie the knot. On top of that, both Harry and Sally do not hide that they can’t stand each other. The third time when they again meet, they are heartbroken and try to get over the broken relationship they had previously. Now, they are closer than they could have imagined. They have built a friendship that seems nothing can tear it apart, except one thing – they start feeling a mutual attraction towards each other where they both do their best not to show it until one day when they are forced to face the reality…
There are particularly two scenes, not the famous one at the restaurant, but when Harry and Sally start discussing Casablanca, when the screen is split in two, as we watch them talking about the film before they go to sleep. The second one is the most charming scene to watch, when Harry and Sally call their friends, Jess (Bruno Kirby) and Marie (Carrie Fisher) simultaneously from two different places to share their latest encounter. Not only the writing, the directing and editing was at the finest, when you could easily laugh throughout without even stopping for a second. Yes, these kinds of films are no longer made and there is no need for it… Because nothing can really beat a classic When Harry Met Sally….
In conclusion, every scene about Rob Reiner’s film is true masterpiece. It’s smart, wickedly written, hilarious and even more than that. It’s beautiful, so easy to watch and extremely engaging. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal share an incredible on-screen chemistry, which I should say, was a crucial part of the film, where you as a viewer must be convinced and you are. Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby are charming as their best friends, who also happen to fall in love with each other.
In the end, watching Reiner’s film all over again will never make you feel bored. If it happened that you have not yet seen it, then you should as soon as you stop reading this. But if you already did, then invite your best friends to your place, have the film on, and enjoy the rest of your evening the way I did.
