Film Review: “The Great Wall” (2017) ★★★

It will be fair to mention that I expected the least from The Great Wall. I thought it is going to be a movie that will bore me to death, but no, it not only kept me awake throughout the movie, but it had my full attention. It was dynamic, the computer graphics and CGI was amazing and overall was an absolutely fun movie to watch.

The Great Wall follows William and Tovar, European mercenaries who arrived in China for black powder – a dangerous weapon that is being kept behind the Great Wall. But instead, they find themselves involved in the defence of the Great Wall of China in an unequal fight between dangerous creatures that seem unstoppable and even worse – undefeatable.

As the story unfolds, you find both men strong, wise and resourceful when it comes to using their strategic approach in the fight for life. This is how the movie begins, when William cuts off the hand of a monstrous creature and heads towards the Wall in the hope to find some answers. Well, he sure finds one, but also gets an opportunity to get involved in an epic fight that was 60 years overdue. But this time, with the help of the strongest and brave warriors of China and fearless Commander Lin Mae, our heroes will face their most outstanding battle yet that only an intelligent mind can resolve…

In terms of writing, The Great Wall was not one of the best, but when it comes to cinematography, beautiful sceneries and large scale battle scenes – this movie certainly exceeds all possible expectations. It also had some goofy scenes, but not too significant to be concerned about. There is not much to expect from the performance, even though it was solid and acceptable to the viewer’s eyes.

To conclude, the movie directed by Yimou Zhang is an action-packed movie with the element of fantasy, thriller and adventure. And of course, if you ask me at the end if this movie whether it’s worth seeing or not, I guess you should be able to predict my answer by now, as it is certainly worthwhile seeing. But before you do that, do not read any negative reviews and make up your own opinion. Don’t forget to grab your popcorn as you will be needing one to double the pleasure of viewing The Great Wall.
