Sundance 2018 Review: “An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn” (2018) ★★★★★

I have to admit that the reason I decided to watch “An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn” was Aubrey Plaza. l strongly believe she is one of the best comedy actresses nowadays. Her roles in “Ingrid Goes West” (2017, dir. Matt Spicer) or “The Little Hours” (2017, dir. Jeff Barna) manage to make every viewer laugh effortlessly. When it comes to Jim Hosking’s “An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn”, there is one thing I am really interested to know. I’d give everything to have a chance to see the behind-the-scenes of this film and to find out how many takes they had to take before finishing at least one scene. Honestly speaking, the film is so ridiculously funny, that it is surprising to see that nobody got injured by constant laughter.

Well, the film follows the main character – Lulu Danger (Aubrey Plaza) – a young woman who is deeply unsatisfied in her marriage with Shane (Emile Hirsch). She also happens to work for her husband. Lulu is so unhappy and bored that she asks her husband to buy a big TV so that she could sit and watch TV until she gets terribly fat. And then, he will need to also buy a new coach. Things change for Lulu when she learns that a mysterious man from her past – someone she is still in love with, is back to their hometown for one magical show that is expected to change everyone’s life.

But before the madness starts some other events happen that complicate everything. Lulu’s husband decides to steal money from Lulu’s relative Adjay Willis (Sam Dissanayake), who appears to have saved more money in his cashbox than Shane. that same cashbox is stolen from Shane by Lulu with the help of an even more unfortunate criminal named Colin (Jemaine Clement). In fact, Colin is hired to bring the same cashbox to Adjay.

l can continue describing all the mess that happens in the film, but it will be fair to give you the chance to enjoy learning all the juicy details by yourself when you watch it. Overall, Jim Hosking’s film is an awfully hilarious comedy with a stellar cast, whose brave and fearless performances turn this film into a great adventure, full of jokes and some remarkable scenes that will be remembered in the history of cinema as the best of their kind.
