Most of us like watching TV. Some like it because it’s a nice way of escaping reality and some because of their desire to drown into a new realm. There are viewers who like to experience, learn, and be educated through the small screen. Sometimes, it serves the purpose of a common subject to discuss with friends. Whatever it is, it’s always a win-win situation. However, with Netflix’s new series called “The Umbrella Academy”, what you will be getting is much more than just a reason to gather with friends. It’s larger than anything you have seen before or imagined. In other words, it’s so unthinkably good that whatever I say next, you will take it as an exaggeration or just my imagination that played a trick with me. But it has not, and I could not be any happier than I am right now.

“The Umbrella Academy” follows siblings that must reunite after their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), dies under suspicious circumstances. After coming together, the siblings that were trained to save the world must act quickly, as after the reappearance of Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) who warns them that the world has only eight days to live before its end comes. While they try to figure out its cause, they don’t even know that its reason has always been by their side and that they just had no idea about it.

The series begins with the narrator who takes us to a dark and mysterious October 1^st of 1989 when 43 women around the world gave birth at the 12^th hour. This was unusual, the voice of the man explains, because of the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began. Sir Reginald Hargreaves, an adventurer, after learning about it, embarks himself on a journey to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible. Well, what we learn is that he got seven of them. Most of them have superpowers, except one – the isolated Vanya (Ellen Page) who’s kept at a distance for being an ordinary girl.

As the kids begin growing up, their powers become obvious as the need for them to become superheroes turns into an urgent matter. Why Sir Hargreaves did that is something you will have to learn yourself, however, his sudden death a decade later brings together the estranged siblings to mourn their deceased father together. It’s when Number Five appears, who has not even aged a day since the first day he vanished, from the future with the news he shares with Vanya only – that doomsday is coming and it has no intention to show any mercy to humankind.

“The Umbrella Academy”, an American comic book series created and written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Ba, is an extraordinary tale of courage, superheroes that are much more creative and real than the ones you see in the Marvel Universe. They are funny, fearless, and totally unpredictable. Aidan Gallagher’s Number Five is the most exciting character you will ever meet. Tom Hooper’s Luther is a Spaceman that is vulnerable, can cry, but when needed, can crash everything around as well.  Mary J. Blige’s Cha-Cha is an agent with extraordinary fighting skills that, trust me, you would not want to test in person.

Robert Sheehan’s Klaus appears to be a careless drug addict young man, however, as you look closer at him, you become attached to him as if he was your best buddy. David Castaneda’s Diego is a detective that is too emotionally attached to his partner and to his robot Mom as well. Emmy Raver-Lampman’s Allison is another sibling with the skills to convince others to believe in whatever message she tries to convey. And Ellen Page’s Vanya. She plays violin so beautifully that sometimes it’s scary to even listen to her. But once her character is fully developed, you will no longer wonder why.

In conclusion, “The Umbrella Academy” is a series full of action and anything your heart might desire to see in a modern series. First fifteen minutes is pure comedy, then it turns into drama, then action, sci-fi, and even horror. The series itself is so engaging, so exciting and refreshing, trust me, once you finish watching the entire season, you will wish to freeze time until season two arrives. Because there’s something special, unreal, and genuinely sensational about “The Umbrella Academy” that you will find yourself keep talking about all the time.
