With the countless number of superhero films and tv series flooding our small and big screens, the question is – do we really need more? Even though the answer itself may be negative, Netflix’s “The Old Guard” shatters all expectations and destroys all scepticism as if it never existed. And when names such as Charlize Theron is attached, there is never a doubt regarding success or, at least, a decent project that will equally entertain and make us think at the same time.
The film tells the story of a team of immortal mercenaries led by the fearless Andy (Charlize Theron). As their identities were suddenly exposed, they begin their fight against the powerful Pharma to protect themselves. However, things get more complicated when a new member appears after more than a century, forcing to think about the most important question – why now?
When the film opens, Andy, Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicky (Luca Marinelli) have the task to release a number of hostages. However, upon arrival, they quickly realize that it was an ambush and setup. When the assassins thought that they have accomplished their mission, the team of four begin their fascinating process of resurrection, leaving their attackers stunned. In the meantime, we are taken to Afghanistan where the American, Marie Nile (Kiki Layne), gets stabbed. However, the deadly hit that should have claimed her life leaves the young woman injured from which she quickly recovers, and it raises more question in her base.
This is when Andy and the team dreamed about her. As it was explained later, if the someone like them resurfaces, they can tell it by seeing the same individual when they sleep. When Andy, finally, finds Nile, their first encounter does not go as smoothly as expected, which surprises Andy to a level where she begins seeing in the young girl full potential. However, as we are yet to learn why another immortal person has appeared on earth, Andy goes on the hunt after Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and find people that want to hunt her down. Through the impressive fighting scenes and exquisite choreography, “The Old Guard” presents the year’s most entertaining action film about superheroes who are unlike those of the DC universe and have their own principles they operate on.
Based on the graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, “The Old Guard” might be the same old story but done in an entertaining way. Fighting scenes, especially with Charlize Theron, are a must see. She does not fall back nor hesitates when it comes to action scenes, which the entire film is loaded with. As for the premise, of course, you may find it repetitive and predictable. But when it comes to films like “The Old Guard” we should not set extremely high expectations rather sit back and enjoy the action.
