There is a pretentious look everyone has. Most people go out with a smile on their face; they are polite, respectful and calm. But when something happens, even something small and insignificant, they forget about their civilized manners and turn into an animal that is ready to tear apart its innocent target.

Set in Romania, Emi (Katia Pascariu) is an exemplary school teacher with an impeccable reputation. The fact that she is one of the best is the least that can be said about her. Her reputation, an image she built, and her strong personality begin to crumble right before her eyes when her graphic homemade sex video appears online. The parents call for an emergency meeting to discuss the matter. But before we begin to judge Emi for her active sexual life, even though it became public, who else can raise a hand to say, they are no saints either?

Written and directed by Radu Jude, “Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn” is a brilliant satirical comedy with the aim of social commentary. It questions the morality of society, its good and pure appearance yet which is as dark as the night. The vast majority of the film has the teacher travelling from one store to another, talking over the phone, as she witnesses the ugly side of society we are left quietly to watch. The whole situation is absurd, tragic and funny at the same time. Standards being put are ridiculous because what they ask from Emi is not what society does in reality.

So it’s okay for someone to try to run over a pedestrian because the driver has no clue he must share the road with others and stay away from the sidewalks? Insulting others on the street, because they simply can? A man can touch the private parts of women and appear in photos with a big smile and even get applauded for this, but when a female teacher with literally no fault got a private video leaked online, all of a sudden she became a persona non grata.

That being said, Radu Jude’s piece is raw, brave and thought-provoking. But due to severe sexual content and strong language, I would not advise watching it with the entire family. Maybe alone it will be much better. But at least, towards the end of the film, you will have some great ideas and a good topic to discuss with friends, because this film has plenty of it. So be ready and do not miss it. Because it’s, at the end of the day, a comedy, even though, a dark one.
