NEWS: Oscar Nominations 2016: The Complete List

Advertisements

On January 14th of 2016, all eyes were on Los Angeles, where Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Guillermo Del Toro, John Krasinski and Ang Lee announced the 88th Academy Awards nominations. Senor Del Toro and Lee announced the nominees in 11 categories, while Boone Isaacs and Krasinski had to divide the remaining 13 categories. For those who do not know how it works, it’s good to know that the Academy members from each of the 17 branches vote to determine the nominees from their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, directors nominate directors etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominees are selected by a vote of multi-branch screening committees, which would be great to know about a bit more. However, all voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees, for which you can see the result below.

After reviewing the complete list of nominees, it appears that The Revenant leads with 12 nominations, while Mad Max: Fury Road comes second with 10. Ridley Scott’s THE MARTIAN received 7 nominations, while the big success of 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has to be content with only 5 nominations. One of the subtlest, amazingly directed film which has superb performances by Kate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, CAROL, has received only 6 nominations, whereas the above mentioned actors will have to await to find out who will take the statue home.

Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl received 4 nominations, but could not fit into the The Best Motion Picture category. Here I must say, I could not agree more with those who did not find this film as good to be nominated.
