When I first heard about “Damsel”, starring Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska, l did not expect it to be very entertaining. In fact, it was one of those times when l did zero research on the film and was prepared that I will end up not writing any review on it. l must say, quite the opposite happened, and here I am writing a review after watching this excellent comedy that literally combines three storylines in one film and everything fits in perfectly.
“Damsel” is a western period comedy. The film follows the protagonist Samuel Alabaster (Robert Pattinson) who is madly in love and goes on an ambitious quest to find the Preacher Parson Henry to officiate the marriage between him and the love of his life Penelope. His whole journey turns into an unpredictable story, while only one thing will remain unchanged – the size of his superbly adorable miniature horse named Butterscotch.
Every scene in “Damsel” is gold – ridiculously amusing and an absolute fun to watch. The second half of the film takes a completely unexpected turn, and that, I am sure, will leave the viewer speechless. Some scenes are filmed so well, that you will give up trying to guess what’s coming next or how the film will end. Instead, you will simply enjoy this delightful comedy. You will simply let “Damsel” guide you through this funny adventure and will simply hope for the best ending for the characters.
The film is co-written and co-directed by David Zellner and Nathan Zellner, who also appear in the film as Parson Henry and Rufus Cornell respectfully. The story offers a humoristic look into Samuel’s, Parson’s Henry and Penelope’s ways to survive under very strange circumstances. Each character has something on their mind, and you will not be able to predict it until the film reveals it to you at the very last moment.
Robert Pattison’s Samuel is simply adorable. With the performance he delivers, he can easily become a comedy actor. In fact, it feels like Pattison and Samuel are identical twins, and you would not be able to tell the difference – where the actor ends and the character begins. As for Mia Wasikowska’s Penelope, there is only one thing l can tell – she is vibrant, energetic and a very refreshing part of the film. I’d say, anyone who wishes to get closer to her, must think twice before doing so.
In conclusion, “Damsel” is a surprisingly enchanting and cute comedy you would never want to miss. The impressive and wicked lines, the good directing as well as the fine performance delivered by the cast scream for more viewers. This film has what we all need – the gateway to a different dimension to vacate ourselves for an unforgettable and weird journey with the unique and richly described characters of “Damsel”. And, trust me, you will find it very hard not to care about them.
