Sundance 2019 Film Review: “Corporate Animals” (2019) ★★★

What is the first thought that comes to your mind as soon as you hear about the movie title called “Corporate Animals”? It may suggest it’s about Wall Street or about a big corporation that eats smaller companies by buying them. That’s what I thought, at least, as I decided to do zero research on it prior to entering the press and industry screening at Sundance to get ready for something super grand. Well, this film was not as big as I might have expected, but what it offered instead was way better than I expected.

Lucy (Demi Moore) is ruthless, selfish, self-centered, and a full-of-herself CEO of Incredible Edibles, America’s first premier provider of edible cutlery. She decides to take her team on a corporate team-building caving activity event in New Mexico. While her two assistants, Jess (Jessica Williams) and Freddie (Karan Soni) try to figure out who is going to get promoted to the position of VP, the group find themselves inside of a cave. Seems like a fun event but a short earthquake blocks their way out and even their guide Brendan (Ed Helms) was unable to help them. But one way the guide was able to help is to fill the trapped tummies with food provided by his dead body.

“Is that how you all want to be found, with Brendan’s ear coming out of your mouth,” objects Lucy, who secretly hides his hand to eat later at night while the rest of the team struggle in hunger at night. But overall, the entire situation turns into an absurd survival journey filled with some great lines, funny scenes, and casual cannibalism. But even though it may sound like a horror movie, trust me, you would not mind watching it at all.

In conclusion, written by Sam Bain and directed by Patrick Brice, “Corporate Animals” is a goofy horror comedy you will have plenty of reasons to have fun throughout. Even though Britney Spears and Gary Sinise were not presented in the film physically, but their spirit helped raise its bar, to turn your ride even more entertaining. As for the entire cast, all of them delivered solid performances, while Demi Moore as a megalomaniac CEO was endlessly hilarious.
