There is at least one person out of ten who will say that his or her family is weird. Whatever that reason may be, that can be a possibility. But if you compare that weirdness with the Addams Family, no doubt, there isn’t a family that could match the appetite of the Addams’ towards things society would nowadays deem unacceptable. However, if you have a closer look at them, they are not as bad or wicked as they appear to us and they are as normal as any other family but whose needs are rather just a bit exclusive.
“The Addams Family” is based on beloved old characters created by Charles Addams and follows the most charismatic family who is forced to find a new home in New Jersey’s haunting house where Morticia (Charlize Theron) and her husband Gomez Addams (Oscar Isaac) hope to extend their life to the fullest. Years later, when nothing seems can disrupt their awfully entertaining and dark life, the appearance of a neighbor, local celebrity Margaux Needle (Allison Janney), and her plan to redesign their home in accordance to the needs of the 21st century turns into a fun journey full of spooky ups and downs that fits well into the requirements of the Addams family who will enjoy every minute of it.
When the animated film starts, we find the big Addams family running for their life threatened by angry villagers who follow hot at their tails. This disappoints Morticia to the level where she had to plead to her husband for a better and safer place for their future children. When they finally find refuge in New Jersey, thirteen years later, the Gomez and Morticia become happy parents to a daughter, Wednesday (Chloe Grace Moretz), and a son, Pugsly (Finn Wolfhard). As they get ready for his sword-dance ceremony called “Sabre Mazurka”, the young boy will either pass the ceremony or get eaten by the wild and hilarious Addams who are traveling to New Jersey from all over.
The family minds their own business, enjoy awful weather, dark colors, torturing their own family members, Lurch (Conrad Vernon) who never stops being Lurch or Thing, who is quite the musician, and Uncle Fester (Nick Kroll) who is more adorable than before. Overall, the family does not give up their habits even when their daily routine life is in jeopardy after sending Wednesday to Middle School where she quickly feels like home. But when an arrogant TV host, Margaux Needler, knocks on the Addams Family’s door, we begin seeing the family in their true elements that made them famous – haunting, irresistible, hideously funny, and transparent when it comes to showing their most notable family values in the most incredible and unbelievable way.
Directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tieman, “The Addams Family” offers an enjoyable ride to the past impacted by everyone who grew up falling for the most eccentric family ever. Some notable lines that revived the Addams Family were written by Vic Mizzy who delivers that delicious moment where you cannot decline the beauty and richness of the characters brought back to us through the animated version. Certainly, nothing can beat the 1964 version – that’s an undeniable fact. But that does not take away the spookiness of the newly created Addams Family that well deserves our attention even if we’re skeptical about it.
