Fantasia 2021: “Don`t Say Its Name”

Advertisements

Rating: 3 out of 5.

We don’t often see films that revolve around a small indigenous community, especially where the presence of women is strong. But that is a great beginning to show the importance of that world, which is ours too, but we’re yet to accept it within us.

A small town seemingly leading an uneventful life is shocked when a local activist, Kharis Redwater, gets killed. The mining company, WEC, gets an agreement that will benefit its deep pockets but not the land itself. A small community, full of snow, is the perfect place to live a quiet life, yet, gives an opportunity to those who wish to harm others. Mary Stonechild (Madison Walsh) and Ranger Stacey Cole (Sera-Lys McArthur) lead an investigation in which a strange killing occurs after the victim first sees a bird and then, smells something just to die viciously seconds after.

“Don`t Say Its Name”, from director Rueben Martell, is a decent horror thriller that gives women a place to shine. That does not mean it should be seen just because of that. However, with the chosen narrative, the film well justifies the need for two women and how they begin to work together, even though, both use different methods to track down bad guys. Maybe not too scary, the film still qualifies to be more or less scary, but not as much to make you run for your life. As the story unfolds, there will be many surprises waiting for you to witness, like everything else, including the hunt for a mysterious creature that will occur right before your eyes.
