Best Horse Racing Movies on Netflix

Horse racing is one of the world’s favorite sports, so it’s no surprise to see that it has been used as the main theme for many movies over the years.

If you’re looking to settle down and enjoy a night in with a horse racing movie. The following are some of your top choices on Netflix worth taking a look at.

Being AP

This documentary follows AP McCoy from Northern Ireland, who was one of the most famous jump jockeys of all time, headlining horse racing news. It tracks AP during his final season in the sport, showing us the decisions he makes and the final triumphs he achieves.

AP is regarded as the most successful top jump jockey to ever compete in the sport. His incredible record saw him ride over 4,300 winners following his debut in 1992, and be named Champion Jockey a record 20 times in a row. His famous victories included the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Champion Hurdles races.

In real life, the jockey is now known as Sir Tony McCoy. He was in the news lately for saving the life of young jockey James Bowen, who was knocked unconscious and in danger of swallowing his tongue. He has also spoken out on the mental health challenges of remaining at the top of his chosen sport for so long.

Walk. Ride. Rodeo

This 2019 movie is based on the real-life story of Amberley Snyder, a barrel racing rider in the world of rodeos who suffered a serious spinal injury in a car accident. Amberley is played by Spencer Locke and we see how she attempts to get back to the sport she loves even though she is paralyzed from the waist down.

The doctors have to tell Amberley that she will spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair, but the rider refuses to accept that diagnosis. Pushing herself as hard as she can, she uses a safety belt to let her get back on a horse and is ready to continue with her dream of becoming a professional barrel racer.

Rock My Heart

This German movie is a drama about a teenager named Jana who has a potentially fatal heart condition. She doesn’t let this stop her from training to become a jockey and establishing a special bond with a rebellious stallion. It perhaps doesn’t have the action and excitement of watching the Kentucky Derby or the Belmont Stakes, but this is a heart-warming story with a feel-good factor.

Jana is played by actress Lena Klenke. She impresses enough on the horse to catch the eye of professional race trainer Breener, who is played by Dieter Hallervorden. He employs her as his apprentice and Jana has to learn how to deal with the action-packed lifestyle without letting it affect her health.

Ride Like a Girl

This is another horse racing movie that’s based on a true story. In this case, it’s about Michelle Payne, who became the first female jockey to ever win the Melbourne Cup in Australia. In fact, to make it even more impressive, she won Australia’s most important horse race at incredibly long odds and also won the Hilton Hotels Stakes in the same event.

As the youngest in a family of ten children, Michelle has to fight hard to make her mark in the world. Her historic victory came in the 2015 Melbourne Cup, when came home in first place on Prince of Penzance. She remains the only woman to have ever won this race.

If you love watching horse races, you should enjoy any of these movies. They show us different sides to the sport that we don’t normally see and let us appreciate the human side of the sport for once.
