Johnny Depp is back in studio territory, and he’s not easing in quietly. Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer for Day Drinker, a supernatural revenge thriller that marks one of Depp’s first starring roles in a studio project in years. The film opens in theaters on March 26, 2027.

What Is Day Drinker About?

The setup sounds simple. Madelyn Cline plays Lorna, a bartender working on a private yacht, while Johnny Depp plays the mysterious guest she meets on board. Penélope Cruz plays a criminal figure, and before long the three are tangled together in ways none of them could have predicted.

Day Drinker Trailer Breakdown

The teaser makes clear this is no straightforward thriller. Depp’s character, Kelly, arrives grey-haired and heavily bearded, with piercing blue eyes and an Irish accent, surrounded by tarot cards, candlelight and an axe. In voiceover, he muses on whether his story is one of revenge, something darker, or simply a ghost story. The footage teases gun and axe fights, a Cruz who may have supernatural gifts of her own, and plenty of time out on the water, along with a haunting image of a woman’s body drifting into the sea that hints at what set Kelly on his path. Even the title font leans horror, calling back to vintage paperback horror novels.

Who Made Day Drinker?

Behind the camera, Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man) directs from a screenplay by Zach Dean, whose credits include The Tomorrow War, Fast X and The Gorge. The film is produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, the team behind the John Wick franchise, alongside Adam Kolbrenner, Nathan Kahane and Dean.

A Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz Reunion

Day Drinker is Depp and Cruz’s fourth film together, following Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Murder on the Orient Express. For Cline, it’s her first project since wrapping Outer Banks, the Netflix series that made her a star, which concluded with its fifth season in August.

The film is part of a busy stretch for Depp. Day Drinker was the first studio project he shot since Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018, yet audiences will see him first as Scrooge in Ti West’s Ebenezer, which opens November 13 despite being filmed later.
