Hollywood’s most tireless movie star is getting one of the film world’s most prestigious honours. The American Film Institute’s Board of Trustees announced on Wednesday, October 21, that Tom Cruise will receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award. He will be celebrated at a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 24, 2027.

The evening will follow the award’s beloved tradition: clips spanning the honoree’s career, tributes from friends and collaborators, and an acceptance speech from Cruise himself. All proceeds from the gala support AFI’s education and arts initiatives.

“A Global Icon”

“Tom Cruise is a global icon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees. Kennedy praised the commitment Cruise brings to his work as both actor and producer, and singled out his belief in the power of movies to bring audiences together, calling that passion the thing that has made him an ambassador for American film around the world.

It’s hard to argue. Few stars have fought harder for the big-screen experience. When much of the industry was looking to streaming, Cruise held Top Gun: Maverick for a theatrical release and helped pull audiences back into cinemas worldwide.

Four Decades of Movie Stardom

Now 64, Cruise has been headlining films since the early 1980s, and his movies have grossed nearly $13 billion worldwide. His filmography reads like a tour of modern Hollywood: Risky Business, Top Gun, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, Minority Report, and, of course, the Mission: Impossible franchise, which turned death-defying practical stunts into his signature.

He has earned three Oscar nominations for acting, plus a fourth as a producer when Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for Best Picture. Last November, the Academy finally gave him a statuette of his own, presenting him with an honorary Oscar at the 16th Governors Awards.

What’s Next for Cruise

The honour arrives while Cruise is in the middle of a bold new chapter. He currently stars in Digger, directed by Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu, a role that already has him in the Best Actor conversation this awards season. He is also set to return as race car driver Cole Trickle in a sequel to Days of Thunder.

Joining a Legendary Roster

Established in 1973, the AFI Life Achievement Award goes to a single honoree each year whose talent has fundamentally advanced the art of film and whose work has stood the test of time. Director John Ford was the first recipient. Cruise now joins a list that includes Bette Davis, Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Poitier, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep and Denzel Washington.

The most recent honorees include Eddie Murphy, who received the award earlier this year, Francis Ford Coppola, and Nicole Kidman, Cruise’s former wife and Days of Thunder co-star.

For an actor who has spent 45 years insisting that movies are meant to be seen together, in the dark, on the biggest screen possible, this one feels especially fitting. April 24 can’t come soon enough.
