Film Review: “John Wick: Chapter 4” (2023)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Keanu Reeves has already cemented his name in the cinematic universe. His ability as an action hero is impeccable. Techniques, fighting scenes, or even holding the gun (or multiple guns) – he knows what he is doing. It is almost like he goes against himself – challenges himself, and watches how far he can go. Like a computer game – one level after another – he just does not know how to stop. “John Wick: Chapter 4” is that type of film where the bar for action films has been raised to the point only a few can beat it.

The plot of “John Wick: Chapter 4” is still the same — the titular character (Keanu Reeves) once again goes against the High Table, but this time all fully packed with action and ambitious demands. As he plots revenge against the “Elder,” the senior member of the Table, Marquis Vincent de Gramont, prepares a response. He sends an army of assassins to the Osaka Continental, run by Wick’s friend Shimazu Koji. It’s the moment when the war begins against the good and the best. Nothing will stop John Wick until he reaches the throat of Marquis, so Marquis knowing what is at stake ensures it will be a hard fight even for Wick to take on.

Just to leave everything aside as to what the plot might offer next, if you have seen the entire franchise, then you know what to expect next. It’s absurd, I must assure you of that. Nothing that you will see makes sense, nor is it even possible. It’s like the world in a parallel universe you hope does not exist. Yet it’s the world that belongs to John Wick, and he is like a King, rules as he pleases. The old and beloved cast returns again, including the late Lance Reddick, Hiroyuki Sanada, Laurence Fishburne, and Donnie Yen. As you can see from the names attached above, expect a long and wild ride of fighting scenes, brutal killings, and bullets flying left and ride, hoping none of them will catch John Wick.

Indeed, Chad Stahelski has done the impossible. He delivered the best action sequences in a decade. Keanu Reeves showcases the most absolute physical for this role because it’s almost like all scenes were taken in one sequence, especially the stairs scene — oh, that is a delight on its own and deserves a standing ovation. That scene is a roller coaster, up and down — your breath will be taken away. You will seek fresh air, but once you inhale one, you will need more. That’s what this film achieves — the height of action cinema of the 21st century that must reign and will reign for generation to come. As for John Wick, he was a legend before, but now he is more so – he is unbeatable, terrifying to his opponents, and fearless. Because nothing can stop him, not even the sense of death that is always around the corner, that will always wait for him once he calls it quits. But will he truly? That is the answer you should most certainly find out for yourself.
