Warner Bros. has released the final trailer for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “Digger,” and it’s our best look yet at Tom Cruise completely disappearing into a role — literally. Gone is the sleek action hero; in his place is Digger Rockwell, a Southern-accented, combed-over, potbellied oil tycoon whose reckless business empire kicks off a global catastrophe he then frantically tries to spin himself out of.

Described by Warner Bros. as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” Digger follows the title character — “the most powerful man in the world” — on a self-serving mission to cast himself as humanity’s savior before the disaster he unleashed (a company project that triggers a massive Greenland glacier shift) spirals into global conflict. It’s satire with teeth: Iñárritu has said he spent nearly a decade developing the film to dig into greed, power, and responsibility, framing it as a disaster movie where humanity itself becomes the disaster.

This marks Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since 2015’s “The Revenant,” and he’s brought some heavyweight collaborators along: Emmanuel Lubezki behind the camera (shot entirely on 35mm VistaVision), editor Stephen Mirrione, and a stacked ensemble surrounding Cruise — Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy.

Cruise, for his part, has called the role one of the biggest creative risks of his career: “I have never had something that could challenge me in this way, and neither has Alejandro.” Considering it’s a filmmaker with two Best Director Oscars pairing with a movie star who’s never quite landed an acting statuette, it’s easy to see why the awards-season chatter is already writing itself.

“Digger” opens internationally beginning September 30 and hits North American theaters and IMAX on October 2.
