FIlm Review: “All About Eve” (1950)

Masterpiece and One Of The Greatest Films of All Time. It`s all about great acting and storytelling.

Directed by: Joseph L. Mankiewicz

Screenplay: Joseph L. Mankiewicz

Cast: Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Hugh Marlowe, Gregory Ratoff, Barbara Bates, Marilyn Monroe and Thelma Ritter

“Synopsis: She is desperate and hopeless. At the same time, she is young, beautiful and determined. She has nothing except her natural beauty and love for the theater. She admires Margo Channing, and wants to be like her. She is willing to do anything to be part of that bohemian lifestyle. She wants to be famous and recognized around the world. For Eve Harrington patience it’s a game. And she knows better than anyone else how to play the game…

Joseph L. Mankiewicz, was an American born director, writer, and producer. He directed over 20 motion picture films and wrote screenplays for over 40 films. Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed Cleopatra with the unparalleled Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Having a long Hollywood career, Joseph won the Academy Award twice for Best Director and Best Writing for the screenplays- “A Letter to Three Wives and “All About Eve.” With his tremendous vision, talent and ability, he wrote brilliant dialogues for all the films he worked on making him irreplaceable. And that`s where the story, “All About Eve’, begins – one of the best classics ever made.

Bette Davis plays an aging theatrical actress, Margo Channing. who has absolutely everything; she is graceful and elegant; smart and popular; for the audience she is a Goddess.  But it`s all about to come to an end with the appearance of Eve Harrington (shockingly and decently played by Anne Baxter). Margo Channing had already earned her place under the sun. But the question is- Is she ready to share this place with her understudy?

Eve Harrington dreams about being in the theater. She has the ability to talk nice and convince people of her story to manipulate them for whatever she wants. Eve Harrington is not the charming and naïve young lady she seems. Eve is very manipulative, selfish and has a very dark mind.  She knows what she wants and how to get it. For her, it`s all about time. And she has a plan; a dark, and dangerous plan, that will destroy someone`s career and she doesn’t really care as long as the winner takes all.

“All About Eve” is an incredibly beautiful and phenomenally smart film full of brilliant dialogue and a surprising storyline that makes this film timeless and one of the best classics ever made. By the end of the movie you are unable to tell the difference between Eve Harrington and Deception; Eve and Betrayal; Eve and Duplicity.

Bette Davis has appeared in countless movies. With her name, you can study the Golden Age of Hollywood. Her talent is so obvious that you think she isn’t acting, because she is who she is. She is Margo Channing, or Mildred from “Of Human Bondage, Joyce from “Dangerous” and Julie from “Jezzebel”. Sometimes, it`s hard to see the difference between Bette Davis herself and Baby Jane Hudson (Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?). All of her movies became classics and “All About Eve” is one of them.

Sadly, Hollywood has stopped making good and timeless movies as they used to. Not to mention, the dialogues in most current films is impossible to accept. “All About Eve” has everything; with brilliant and unique dialogues, the actors become the supporting cast. Despite the fact that “All About Eve” was made back in 1950, it`s still fresh, funny, watchable, magnificent and reminds you once again: movie making is an art, acting is an art, and everyone who was part of this film mastered it very well and deserves our applause right along with 21st Century, where movies such as this are no longer made.
